Join me as I recount my solo journey through La Fortuna, where every moment was a step toward understanding and appreciating the enchanting essence of this Costa Rican gem.

Day 1: Arrival, Budget friendly Hotel and Discovering the Charming Town

My solo adventure began with a scenic drive from my hotel in San Ramon (Lands in Love) to La Fortuna, a quaint town nestled in the shadow of the majestic Arenal Volcano. You can also choose to drive here directly from the airport. The road winds through verdant landscapes, and the volcano’s imposing presence looms in the distance.

The heart of the town is the centrally located park – Parque de La Fortuna, a favorite with locals and featuring the iconic La Fortuna photo location of the water fountain with the church and the Arenal volcano looming behind. I spend some time soaking in the relaxed vibe, watching locals and fellow travelers go about their day.

As evening approached, I headed to the ADIFORT shopping center, where an open-air dance performance showcased traditional Costa Rican rhythms and vibrant costumes. The best part was when the dancers pulled in people from the audience to dance! Of course, I didn’t miss the opportunity!

The dance was free to watch and you could leave a tip for the performers in the end which most of the audience did. The show offered a lively introduction to the local culture, and I enjoyed every moment of this cultural immersion.

Next, I tackled the trails of Arenal Volcano with our friendly and knowledgeable guide. The hike provided breathtaking views of the volcano and its surrounding landscapes. My guide shared intriguing details about the volcano’s history and its influence on the area. Along the way, we spotted toucans, a sloth, scarlet rumped tanager, a nose-horned viper and monkeys. The trek was invigorating, and the sheer beauty of the environment made it a memorable experience.
