White Picket Fences and Ernest Hemingway – My Dreams Came True in Key West!

If you’re visiting Miami and looking for an exciting one-day getaway, a trip to Key West is a perfect choice. Known for its scenic drives, historic landmarks, and unique charm, Key West offers something for every traveler. Here’s a detailed guide to my unforgettable day trip to Key West, including all the must-visit spots and practical tips for exploring this tropical paradise.

Booking the Tour and Early Morning Start

I booked my Key West day trip from Miami through my hotel’s tour desk. The guided bus tour was incredibly convenient, as the bus picked me up right in front of the hotel at 7 AM. As we started our journey, I noticed other travelers boarding the bus from nearby hotels.

Breakfast Stop at Key Largo

After two hours of driving, we stopped at Key Largo for a quick breakfast. The options included McDonald’s and Dollar Tree. Unfortunately, McDonald’s didn’t have any vegetarian options, so I opted for snacks from Dollar Tree. This short break gave everyone a chance to stretch before continuing the journey.

The Scenic Drive Along US Route 1

The drive from Miami to Key West is a highlight in itself, passing through the famous US Route 1. This route is known for its stunning views of the turquoise waters, lush greenery, and the iconic Seven Mile Bridge, one of the longest bridges in the world. We also passed by the Everglades and various scenic keys, making the drive truly picturesque.

Reaching Key West and Exploring the Island

Pretty Pastel Key West Houses

At around 11:30 AM, we arrived in Key West. This laid-back island is perfect for exploring on foot or via the free Duval Loop bus, which connects all the major attractions. I decided to combine walking and the free bus service to make the most of my time.

Strolling Through Key West: Pretty Houses and Zero Mile Marker

Key West is famous for its colorful, charming houses, so I started my exploration by walking along the quiet streets lined with these beautiful homes. My first stop was the Zero Mile Marker, the starting point of US Route 1 and a must-visit spot for road trip enthusiasts.

You could also call it the end of the road depending upon which direction you are traveling in!

Visiting the Ernest Hemingway Home & Museum

Next, I visited the Ernest Hemingway Home & Museum, one of the main reasons I wanted to visit Key West. As a book lover and fan of Hemingway’s works, I was thrilled to see his well-preserved house, lush gardens, and the famous six-toed cats roaming around. The museum is a treasure trove of literary history and a must-see for anyone visiting the island.

Southernmost Point of the USA

After a short walk past the Key West Lighthouse, I boarded the Duval Loop bus and headed to the Southernmost Point of the Continental USA. This iconic buoy-shaped sign marks the southernmost tip of the country, just 90 miles from Cuba. The line to take photos was long, but the experience was worth the wait.

Note: The SMP is the southernmost point of the Continental USA only; the southernmost point of the entire USA lies in Hawaii, as I was kindly schooled on social media lol. So, don’t make the mistake of calling it the Southernmost point of USA. That falls in the beautiful Hawaii which I hope to visit some day!

Lunch at The Cafe and Key Lime Pie Hunt

For lunch, I headed to The Cafe, a vegan restaurant famous for its healthy options and Key Lime Pie. Key Lime Pie is a local delicacy and a must-try in Key West. Unfortunately, they were out of pie, so I enjoyed a delicious veggie sandwich and a moist vegan carrot cake instead.

After lunch, I strolled along the lively Duval Street, the heart of Key West’s nightlife and culture. This vibrant street is lined with bars, cafes, cigar shops, souvenir stores, and iconic spots like The Whistle Bar and Sloppy Joe’s Bar. The energy and charm of this street are truly infectious!

No trip to Key West is complete without a visit to the Key Lime Bakery, the birthplace of the famous Key Lime Pie. I shopped for some Key Lime-flavored chocolates and mints, perfect souvenirs to take home.

Walking Through the Historic Seaport

Walking Through the Historic Seaport was a beautiful experience

I then made my way to the Historic Seaport, a picturesque area with a charming pier and several boat tours and snorkeling options. Although I didn’t have time to join a tour, I enjoyed walking along the pier and soaking in the serene atmosphere. I also finished the leftover carrot cake (the portions at ‘The Cafe’ are generous!) on a bench facing the sea, making it the perfect snack spot!

Final Stop: Mallory Square

My last stop was Mallory Square, known for its bustling market and the newly opened The Shops at Mallory Square shopping mall. This area is great for browsing unique local items and souvenirs.

Return to Miami

As the day ended, I decided to walk back to my bus, savoring the charm of Key West one last time. The return journey to Miami was equally scenic, and I couldn’t help but reflect on the memorable experiences of the day.

Snorkeling and Boat Tours: An Option for Adventure Seekers

For those looking to add some adventure to their Key West experience, there are plenty of options to book snorkeling, glass-bottom boat tours, or sunset cruises. During the drive to Key West, the tour guide provided brochures and details about these activities, making it easy to plan ahead. These tours offer a chance to explore the vibrant marine life and stunning waters surrounding the island.

However, with limited time on my day trip, I decided to skip these activities and focus on exploring Key West’s charming streets, its iconic pretty houses, and visiting the Ernest Hemingway Home & Museum, which was a priority for me.
