Rainy Day Activity – A Pirate-Mermaid Adventure Storytelling with #colgatemagicalstories

July 23, 2016 1 Comment

As the monsoon is finally here in full swing, I am looking for creative ideas to keep kids occupied indoors. Today, the kids unlocked their imagination with the Colgate special edition packs. The new value packs contain magical sea world pictures on the inside. The kids can cut these out and let their imagination run wild. I used them to introduce my kids to the lost art of storytelling!

The colgate packs feature 4 different sets of designs:

  1. Pirate Ship
  2. Coral Reef
  3. Sea Magic
  4. Treasure Hunt

Having all four of these, my kids mixed pieces from different sets to come up with their own creative story. The pictures are also supported with interesting trivia about sea creatures and the kids are now discussing everything from ‘how the puffer fishes puff themselves up with water’ to “how the star fish can re-grow their limbs”.

We mixed pictures from all 4 packs to create our own unique story!

The packs contain plenty of interesting trivia

An Interesting Pirate-Mermaid Adventure Story

Like all boys his age, my son is very much into pirates. He got all psyched up when his favorite pirate themed pictures appeared inside the pack. He enlisted his sister to cut out all the scenes and ‘bases’ to make each picture stand independently.

Cutting out pictures

And while she was busy cutting them out, he fished out all his pirate belongings and decked himself up! I played the perfect mommy and gave him his pirate ship (which is a cupcake holder for pirate themed parties actually) to use as a backdrop 🙂

Now, I was expecting him to come up with a usual story about how a pirate goes looking for hidden treasure and/or rescues a mermaid. But he stunned me by coming up with a very different story line!

Superhero Sea Animals and the Evil Pirate

And here is the brief version of our (copyrighted, of course!) story:

The pretty mermaid princess lives in her magical kingdom in the depths of the sea. An evil pirate sets sail in his ship along with his allies and his pet parrot. He goes to the magic kingdom and abducts the mermaid and brings her to his ship. The mermaid cries for help.

Pirate Mermaid Adventure Storytelling- The evil pirate going to snatch the mermaid from her magical sea kingdom

The friendly sea animals including the cute little turtle, the seahorse and the crab listen to her plea for help and decide to rescue her. Together, they brave storms, whales, sharks and other dangers. Then, they ‘steal’ the mermaid and take her back to her kingdom. But they are discovered by the crew and someone sounds the alarm on the ship. Then, ensues a big battle of the sea animals and the pirates. In the end, the sea animals win.

The mermaid princess returns to her kingdom and lives there with her friends – the sea animals who helped rescued her from the clutches of the evil pirate.

The picture above shows the beginning of the story. The evil pirate goes to abduct the mermaid. The rest of the story has been captured on video. I will upload it as soon as I am done editing. The file size is way too large right now!

All in all, it was a wonderful rainy afternoon spent encouraging the kids to be as creative as possible. Have you tried the new Colgate packs yet? If yes, do comment what stories your kids came up with!
