Johnson’s Baby Bath Milk+Rice Review

March 20, 2017 8 Comments

Johnson’s Baby Bath Milk+Rice is another lovely baby product from the brand of Johnson & Johnson. While I never shy away from trying out anything from this brand, the recent developments make me read labels twice. I don’t think there is any other name that reminds me of my own childhood than this one. Sharing my Johnson’s Baby Bath Milk+Rice review with what I loved and what I did not, about this baby bath.

Johnson's Baby Bath Milk+Rice Review

Johnson’s Baby Bath Milk+Rice is different from the Milk bath of the same brand. It’s ingredients are also very different from the popular Top to Toe Wash.

Johnson’s Baby Bath Milk+Rice

The single most physical feature of the Johnson’s Baby Bath Milk+Rice is its color. Unlike all other baby bath washes, it is white in color. Here are some features I love:

  1. The baby bath wash is white in color
  2. Rich in protein from milk and rice
  3. Has a VERY pleasant smell
  4. Does not irritate the skin and the eyes at all, in spite of the SLS.
  5. Can be used over mild diaper rash (check out my diaper rash remedies) without risk of irritation.
  6. It is a shampoo cum body wash
  7. The 500 ml bottle comes with a handy dispenser that I love
  8. Although the feel of the body wash is milky, it is a very good cleanser and leaves the skin non-greasy.

The ‘Not So Good’

Unfortunately, the Johnson’s Baby Bath Milk+Rice available in India, which is an import, contains SLS. Now SLS (sodium lauryl sulphate) is a cheap cleanser similar to detergents and has no business in baby products. While SLS is not directly harmful, it can, when combined with other ingredients, cause skin and eye irritation. While none of these signs were visible, SLS is clearly known to be harmful for skin and should be avoided for newborns and babies.

As a result of the SLS present in the body wash, the skin feels nourished after the bath, but after some time, tends to dry out a little, although nothing alarming. The amount of SLS seems to be very low since it is not a very bubbly wash, but it is present and that is scary enough. Why would you risk it when there are other SLS and paraben-free options for baby wash available, right?

I tested this baby bath on my kids including my 2 year old. But I don’t think I would try this on a newborn or even upto 1 year of age. I would really like it if the J&J people looked into this and replaced the SLS with SLES or some other cleanser fit for babies. It is a shame that such a lovely concept should go waste because of this.

The Best Smelling Baby Bath Wash in India!

Johnson's Baby Bath Milk+Rice - Best Smelling Baby Wash in India

If there was an award for the best baby product fragrance, Johnson’s Baby Bath Milk+Rice would win it hands down. It has a very mild, non-overpowering and pleasant fragrance which received compliments from every single person in my family. You just won’t stop leaning loser to your baby to keep smelling it!

Could Have Been Perfect For Moms Too

Johnson & Johnson markets the Johnson’s Baby Bath Milk+Rice for baby and moms. And I will be honest. I did not even know about this fact before I was tempted to use it myself. I love using baby products on my skin now and then but the lovely white color, gentle fragrance and the promise of milk and rice proteins drove me to this one. But, SLS is not good for any skin be it babies of moms. Again, if the SLS issue is taken care of, this will become a family favorite.

Final Thoughts

The idea of using milk and rice protein is perfect and the mild smell is just perfect for babies. The presence of SLS spoils it all though. With a different cleanser added, this would have been my first choice for baby baths. Until that happens, I am not repeating my purchase.
