What Expenses Are Included in Florida Child Support?

August 19, 2026 Leave a Comment

Florida child support is designed to help cover the everyday financial needs of a child, but the amount is not based on one simple expense or a flat statewide payment. Florida child support generally covers a child’s basic needs, while certain costs such as child care, health insurance, and uncovered medical expenses can be added to the basic support obligation. The exact amount depends on factors such as the parents’ incomes, the number of children, and the parenting-time arrangement.

What Expenses Are Included in Florida Child Support?

For parents researching the average child support payment in Florida, it is important to understand what actually goes into the calculation. Florida’s guidelines use the parents’ combined net income and other relevant factors rather than treating every family the same.

Basic Living Expenses

The basic child support obligation is intended to contribute toward the ordinary costs of raising a child. These expenses can include necessities such as food, clothing, housing, and other routine costs associated with caring for a child.

Florida’s child support guidelines determine a minimum support need based on the parents’ combined monthly net income and the number of children. The resulting amount is then divided between the parents according to their respective shares of the combined income.

That means child support is not necessarily a reimbursement for individual purchases. Instead, the basic obligation is designed to contribute toward the overall financial needs of the child.

Child Care Costs

Child care can be an important part of a family’s budget, particularly when parents need care because of work or education.

Under Florida law, child care costs connected to employment, job searching, or qualifying education are added to the basic child support obligation. The law also limits the amount to what is needed to provide quality care from a licensed source.

The way these costs are divided between parents generally depends on each parent’s percentage share of the combined income.

Health Insurance

Health insurance for a child can also affect the child support calculation. Florida law allows the court to require a parent to provide health insurance or reimburse the other parent for the cost of providing coverage.

The cost of health insurance for the child is added to the basic support obligation and allocated between the parents.

This is separate from health insurance a parent may carry for themselves or other members of the household.

Uncovered Medical and Dental Expenses

Children occasionally need medical or dental care that insurance does not fully cover. Florida’s child support rules specifically address these expenses.

Noncovered medical, dental, and prescription medication costs for the child can be added to the basic obligation unless the court orders the parents to pay those expenses separately based on their respective percentages.

This can include out-of-pocket costs that arise from necessary treatment or medication.

Parenting Time Can Affect the Amount

The amount of child support can also be affected by how much time the child spends with each parent. Florida’s guidelines take overnight stays into account when a parent has substantial time-sharing.

Under the current statute, substantial time-sharing generally means a parent exercises at least 20% of the overnights during the year. The calculation can then be adjusted based on each parent’s share of overnight stays, along with applicable child care and health insurance expenses.

This is one reason two families with similar incomes may end up with different child support amounts.

Extraordinary Expenses and Special Needs

Some children have needs that go beyond ordinary household expenses. Florida law allows courts to consider certain extraordinary medical, psychological, educational, or dental expenses when deciding whether to adjust the guideline amount.

Special needs and other relevant financial circumstances may also be considered when determining whether a deviation from the standard guideline amount is appropriate.

Understanding Your Child Support Calculation

Florida child support is more than a single monthly figure. The calculation can involve income, the number of children, child care, health insurance, uncovered medical costs, and parenting time.

If you are trying to estimate your own obligation, the Florida Courts provide a Child Support Guidelines Worksheet, which is used to organize the information needed for the calculation.

Because individual circumstances can change the result, an online average should not be treated as a prediction of what a particular parent will owe.
