Top 10 YouTube Videos to Encourage Good Habits in Little Kids

May 3, 2017 13 Comments

Screen time can be so fruitful when used correctly! Apps and videos have been my best buddies in teaching my kids a whole lot of things. By the age of two, my daughter knows all colors, numbers 1 to 10, alphabets and a ton of rhymes. But most importantly, she has developed a great interest in good habit routines thanks to some of the videos she sees. I am sharing today our favorite English and Hindi YouTube Videos to encourage good habits in little kids. Kids up to the age of 5 and above also enjoy seeing them and learn a lot from them!

Learning from YouTube Videos

Using home internet is one of the most useful tools you can have as a busy parent. YouTube is my source for a lot of DIY, Motivation, Makeup Tutorials, Reviews and such. It is also a bottomless pit of kids videos. But you need to filter out the best from the not-so-good or your child can end up absorbing a lot of unwanted details. I take time out, when the kids are sleeping, to line up a few videos for them to watch the next day. If we like what we see, I save them to a list. If not, I look for fresh new videos the next day. With this process, over the last few months, I have shortlisted a few videos that are very good to encourage good habits and manners in kids. Most of them are songs which are very easy for the kids to learn and remember.

1. This is the Way We Wash Our Hands

Our first favorite is this super cute song from one of our favorite YouTube channels – Super Simple Songs. The puppet used to shoot this song is so cute even my 11 year old does not leave the room until the song’s over. The song teaches basic morning hygiene like washing face, combing hair, brushing teeth, getting ready for school etc.

2. The Bath Song

Another one from Super Simple Songs is the wonderful little ‘Bath Song’. There are other bath songs on YouTube but we love this one the best. The same cute puppet features in this song too. I wish they devote an entire channel to educational songs using this character. The bath song aims at making bath time fun and includes often forgotten body parts such as toes, knees etc. My kids love it!

3. This is the Way We – Night Time

When I talk of YouTube videos that encourage good habits, I have to mention that this one has been most effective. Morning routines are easier to follow, but when the kids come home all dirty by the end of the day, establishing a bed time hygiene routine is essential. This song makes it fun. It is sung to the tune of ‘This is the way we’ but in place of ‘early in the morning’, it says ‘before we go to bed’. A lovely little song to hum to while you get the kids to wash hands and brush their teeth at night.

4. Getting Dressed Song

This lovely little song made my 2 year old ask me for a “skirt and blouse” to wear! I stick to frocks only as long as possible, but I had to get her a skirt+top because she wanted to ‘pull up her skirt’ just like the monkey girl in the video. This video has both a girl and a boy who get dressed on their own.

5. Put on Your Shoes

Another getting dressed son, you will say! But this song is not just about putting on clothes, it is about getting dressed appropriately when going out, especially during winters. Often in their hurry to go out, the kids skip many important things. This song is just about that. Check it out and you will know what I mean. The kids will also love when the little child in the video puts on everything the wrong way in a hurry! Also, the lyrics are simple and repetitive which makes it easy to teach kids new phrases.

6. Chunnu Munnu

Now going beyond hygiene and individual tasks, a house like mine with 3 hyperactive kids, need this life-saving song! This beautiful Hindi song by our favorite Hindi Rhymes channel Jugnu Kids, teaches kids the values of sharing and compassion. The two little brothers in the video are seen fighting over everything. Their family members lovingly teach them to not quarrel, share and live happily together. We need to sing this song, like 20 times, throughout the day!

7. Johnny Johnny

We all know this rhyme, but this video takes it a little further ahead. This video is the closest to real life kids that you see in modern day India. The little kid lies to his parents, but they are not deceived and the child is well-mannered enough to accept his mistake, apologize and obey his parents. A very, very good song for Indian kids to learn simple manners.

8. Aha Tamatar

My little one is fond of eating tomatoes! Now it might not be because of this song but this is a wonderful song about the benefits of tomatoes. In simple, catchy Hindi lyrics and attractive visuals, the powers of eating a tomato are shown.

9. Clean Up Song

The task of cleaning up has different impacts on kids depending upon their age. Toddlers love to pick things up (and spill them out again) like it’s a game, kids pretend not to listen when you ask them to do it, older children try to blame someone else for the mess. The only option is to make the process simple and fun and turn it into a habit. Together, my 3 kids watch this song and tidy up their room while singing along. It is a fun routine!

10. TV Band Karo

I know it’s ironic that the kids actually have to watch a video to learn to stop watching TV…lol! But honestly, the song is so beautiful and the animation is so interesting that the kids want to run out of the house immediately. And most importantly, the kids learn the rhyme and use it as a motto to go play outside. A very nice Hindi song to sing to your kids every single day.

These are all fabulous way of teaching to our kids. My only issue with the age old most popular rhyme Johny Johny is that we might be giving out a message to our kids that we dont trust them or not to show trust. I prefer the version where the words “Telling Lies?” have been removed.

Beautiful compilation. One alert though: While kids learn good habits via these videos the danger to get addicted to gadgets need to be averted.
