5 Common House Pests And How To Deal With Them

April 4, 2022 Leave a Comment

There’s nothing worse than keeping a clean and tidy home that pesky little pests decide they like the look of for themselves. And yet, this can happen, so it’s helpful to be aware of the potential unwanted house guests that may come to visit and how to deal with them.

5 Common House Pests And How To Deal With Them

Termites

Termites love to eat wood, which they find particularly tasty. Unfortunately, they’re not fussy where they find this delicious treat and will go for the foundations of your house and outdoor furniture. Because they live in dirt, they’ll quietly build a nest in your garden or nearby outside areas and set to work munching without you noticing. Regularly checking garden areas and potential food sources will allow early identification. And regardless of how advanced a detected infestation is, it’s vital to call in exterminators immediately.

Bed Bugs

Sneaking into your home via an infested item, bed bugs will quickly begin making your night times a nightmare. These tiny bugs love the warmth of beds and bedding and the ready dinner supply every night. They’re challenging to remove, especially once well established, so it’s vital to have them dealt with immediately. NY Bed Bug Dogs will sniff out every infested area of your home, ensuring no bug is missed.

Spiders

Most spiders don’t pose a problem to cohabitate with, but they become less than ideal housemates to live with if they’re poisonous. Therefore, it’s helpful to know what species are found in your area and if they’re likely to set up a home on your property. They may live quietly out of the way but knock down a wall or outbuilding, and you could suddenly find yourself surrounded by a potentially nasty swarm. Treating your house yearly will keep the spider population down, and if you have a renovation planned, investigate thoroughly before beginning any demolition.

Rodents

Rodents are more likely to enter your home if it’s messy and unclean, as they’re attracted to a ready supply of food and nesting material. But even when your home is sparkling clean, rats and mice are attracted to a warm and dry environment. Regular building maintenance will help keep them out, with any holes or other potential entry points being blocked up or repaired. And if you do find a little furry visitor has made its way inside, there is a range of humane traps available.

Bees, Wasps, and Hornets

Bees are incredibly beneficial to have around as they pollinate plants; however, sometimes, they set up in the wrong place and suddenly become a nuisance. When a hive becomes too big, a new queen will leave, taking a proportion of the colony with it to make a new hive. If the queen decides your chimney, eaves, or garden looks comfortable, suddenly there’s a swarm of stinging, flying insects far too close for comfort. Contact a local beekeeper to move to the swarm, especially if it’s wasps or hornets, as they can be very aggressive.

Before attempting any removal, it’s worth arranging a CCTV chimney survey to assess the extent of a nest hidden inside your chimney. This non-invasive inspection uses a camera to pinpoint exactly where a colony has settled, helping pest control professionals plan the safest and most effective removal — and preventing the risk of blindly disturbing a nest of aggressive wasps or hornets.

We can’t avoid sharing our world and sometimes home with other creatures, but there are plenty of ways to deal with the issue when those creatures are detrimental or out of place.
