6 Benefits of Having Your Kids Help You in the Kitchen

November 9, 2021 Leave a Comment

There are many advantages to having your kids help with minor tasks around the house from time to time. And one of the times where their help can be most valuable is when cooking. Here’s how having your kids help you cook can benefit both you and them.

6 Benefits of Having Your Kids Help You in the Kitchen

1 – They get to learn

Even if all your kid does is wash the dishes or cut vegetables, just being in the kitchen while you’re cooking can help them learn a lot. Children are naturally observant, and many of the things they are exposed to at a young age stay with them into maturity. On top of that, watching someone else cook helps demystify the practice in their eyes. So by the time they start doing some cooking of their own, they’ll feel more confident getting into it.

And of course, you can do more than just letting them watch. You can explain different things as you do them. And there’s a good chance your child will have plenty of questions about what you’re doing as well.

2 – They get to study

You can use cooking as an opportunity to help your child become more familiar with topics they are learning, or topics they have been struggling with. One good idea is to put your child in charge of reading recipes off the cookbook or an online recipe for you as you try making new things. This will not only be good for the overall reading skills, but it will also allow them to see some math at play as you two puzzle out how to follow the measurement instructions in the book. You can go even further and ask them to get the ingredients and set aside the proper portions themselves, assuming that’s viable.

3 – They get to have fun

Helping out in the kitchen can be fun. Most children will get bored of it eventually, but as long as you respect the limits of your kid’s patience, you can get them excited to be your little helper from time to time. And of course, there’s also a chance that getting your children to help will reveal that they actually have a passion for cooking. It’s not uncommon for people who love cooking to discover that passion at a young age.

4 – You get some appreciation

One of the advantages of having your kid help in the kitchen is that you can get them to realize how much work cooking for an entire family can be. Especially when it comes to specially elaborated dishes. For added effect, you can guide your child through the effort of making their favorite dishes themselves at least once. It’s good learning, and they’ll appreciate all your hard work even more after that experience.

5 – You get to bond

There’s only so much time in a day and we only live for so long — the latter is why getting life insurance from a site like this one is important, after all. And those limitations are also why it’s important to always be on the lookout for opportunities to spend time with your kids and bond with them. Especially if it’s a situation that allows you two to learn new things about one another. And working together in the kitchen is one of those bonding opportunities.

6 – You get some actual help

Of course, the final benefit is that having your child work as an assistant can be helpful. Especially if they turn out to enjoy cooking themselves. A child might not be as fast or effective as a trained adult in the kitchen, but they can still take care of various tasks that will make cooking easier for you. And looking after yourself as a parent is important, so it’s good to ask for help when you need it. Your family needs you, so looking after yourself is also a way to look out for them.
