STRAWLINX Straw Construction Toy by Crafty Chimp: Review + Giveaway

Looking for more ideas to keep kids busy indoors? Like all you moms, I am busy finding ways to find non-Computer/TV ways to keep them creatively engaged. And I am thrilled to team up with Crafty Chimp who specialize in making well-researched and designed creativity kits. Today, I review my first activity kit from this brand – STRAWLINX – and also get a chance to share the joy with one of readers!

Based on their STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts and Math) system, STRAWLINX is an open ended straw construction toy which Crafty Chimp proudly claim to be the first company to launch in India.

The beginner kit has 150 heavy-duty straws, 184 ‘linx’ that are used to connect the straws and an idea guide to get your kids started. The straws are colorful and come in many colors. The linx are made of extremely high quality card paper and are very strong.

A Straw ‘Swing’

The straw construction toy kit lends itself to unlimited possibilities. My kids chose a swing to be their first design and started working on it. While youngsters may require help, older kids will find the guide self-explanatory. Each design is very clearly illustrated and lets you know how many straws and linx you will need to create it.

Educating With Straws

Kids can create helicopters, bridges, towers and ferris wheels using the straws. Once they are able to recreate the designs given in the guide, you can let the kids come up with their own ideas. The activity encourages skill,  concentration and original ideas as a result of which, the kids are inspired to see themselves as “builders” and “creators”. Encourage them to come up with designs for they love – buildings, vehicles etc.

You can also educate the kids in maths and science projects with these straw creations. They will learn the basic of engineering things. The STRAWLINX straw construction kit can also become a great group activity. Your children can enjoy creating larger formations with their friends.

Price and Age Group

STRAWLINX is priced at Rs.450 for the beginner set. It is available through the Crafty Chimp website as well as through other online retailers like FirstCry.com

The recommended age for STRAWLINX is 5 to 10 years. While my 5 year old needed some help and guidance to do it, he and my 10 year old daughter made a good team working on it. Their one year old sister was fascinated by the straws and we are still recovering some of them from different corners of the house!
