If you’re considering a hassle-free way to explore the East Coast, I highly recommend the 6-day bus tour by TakeTours (also known as Mayi Tours). After unforgettable moments at Niagara Falls on Day 3, Day 4 of the tour took us deep into America’s academic and historical heart – Cambridge and Boston.
Morning in Cambridge – A Step Back in Time
Our day began in Cambridge, Massachusetts, home to two of the world’s most prestigious universities: Harvard and MIT. Cambridge has a completely different vibe — it felt like stepping back in time, with its beautiful brick buildings, cobblestone streets, and charming storefronts.
Instead of joining the detailed Harvard campus tour offered by the tour company, I chose to explore Harvard Square on my own. Walking around this historic area, I admired the timeless architecture, quaint shops, and the intellectual energy that seemed to float in the air. It’s a must-visit for anyone who loves classic American university towns.
Guided Tour of MIT and Boston
Later, I rejoined the group for the city tour led by a Harvard alumni, whose personal stories and deep knowledge made the experience even more enriching. Our first stop was the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). It was fascinating to hear about the innovations and traditions that make MIT such a legendary institution.
We then passed through several other college campuses and dormitories before crossing the bridge into Boston.
Exploring the Boston Freedom Trail
Boston is a city steeped in American history, and we explored it through the famous Freedom Trail – a 2.5-mile route that connects 16 historically significant sites. We saw many important landmarks, including:
-
Boston Marathon route
-
Hancock Tower
-
Boston Public Library
-
Benjamin Franklin Memorial
-
The site of the Boston Massacre
-
The Latin School plaque
One of my personal highlights was seeing the Omni Parker House and the Tremont Temple, both of which have connections to Charles Dickens.
Charles Dickens and Boston: A Literary Connection
-
Tremont Temple: This historic venue is famously known as the place where Charles Dickens gave his first public reading of A Christmas Carol in the United States in 1867. It was a momentous cultural event and marked the beginning of his American reading tour, which was a massive success. The audience was captivated by Dickens’ dramatic delivery, and the reading solidified his popularity in America.
-
Omni Parker House Hotel: Dickens stayed at this hotel during his time in Boston. It was known for hosting notable literary figures and intellectuals. In fact, Dickens practiced his public readings of A Christmas Carol in front of a mirror in his suite at the Omni Parker House before his Tremont Temple performance. The hotel has since preserved its connection to Dickens and even has a mirror said to be the one he used.
As a literature lover, this was a special treat.
Free Time at Quincy Market
Our walking tour ended at the lively Quincy Market, where I chose to skip the optional boat tour offered by the company. Instead, I enjoyed exploring the food hall, Boston Harbor, and the vibrant atmosphere of the market. It’s a perfect place to soak in the local flavors, do a bit of shopping, and enjoy street performances.
Overnight in New York City
In the evening, our tour bus drove us back to New York City, where we checked in at the Crowne Plaza Hotel in Elizabeth, NJ, conveniently located near Newark Airport. I didn’t opt for any additional tours for Day 5, choosing instead to use the transportation and accommodation services included in the package.
It was also time to say goodbye to our tour guide, Mark, who had made this journey enjoyable and informative.
Final Thoughts
Day 4 was packed with history, architecture, and academic charm. The visit to Cambridge and Boston gave a completely different perspective on the USA — one that combines intellect, heritage, and timeless beauty.
