On our way to the Dragon Palace Temple or to taste the famous Kamptee ki Lassi, we often make a stop at Kamptee. After marveling at the elegant Christ Church, we turn towards the departed souls who rest in peace at the Christ Church Cemetery. Read on for complete directions to the place and pictures of this surreal piece of history.
How to Get There:
If you are coming from Nagpur airport, take the Kamptee Road, also known as the Nagpur – Jabalpur Road (NH 44).
It’s a 40 minute drive from the airport.
As you reach Kamptee, onn the left side of the road, you will see the Christ Church.
Exactly opposite the church, is the cemetery. The pictures below will help you in locating it.

Christ Church Cemetery
You simply cannot miss this glorious Church building on the main road to Kamptee. Exactly opposite to the church is the cemetery.
Look for this, diagonally opposite of the Christ Church
The term ‘Commonwealth War Graves’ can be misleading. The cemetery does not have graves from the war itself. It wasn’t fought in India. It has graves of soldiers fighting in the Commonwealth war who were stationed here.
Exploring the Ancient Graves in Christ Church Cemetery
You have to admit that the departed souls do have a beautiful resting place here. Away from the noisy, polluted habitats of the living.
A path has come into existence in the middle of the cemetery due to people traveling across villages and towns on foot and on bicycles.
There are many different types and styles of graves to be seen here…
of different shapes and sizes.
Some very unique….
Some entirely intact, some weather-beaten
Some very humble – with just tombstones. They could belong to the lower ranked officers but I am only guessing. I do wish there was someone to shed more light on this, for an enthusiast like me who lives in the Regency and Georgian eras in her mind!
Most have beautiful inscriptions that will take you back in time!
It is impossible to not think of Charlotte and how she must have walked around this area with her parasol in hand. Most likely, complaining about the terrible heat lol!

We have grown up reading about horrifying stories during the British rule in India. But standing before these graves, it is impossible not to feel for these souls. A silent prayer escaped all of our lips as we kept placed a little wildflower on a grave,
With our minds and hearts full of varying emotions, we left the souls to rest in peace….
…the biblical verse comforting us as we left.
