All kids I know, love to dig for buried treasure. And I found the perfect summer vacation activity that combines digging up treasure and education. We came to know about this fun activity when my daughter asked for it as her ‘prize’ for good grades in school!
When my daughter came up with really good marks in her Std V final exams, we asked what she wanted as a token of appreciation. The YouTube generation is always ready with answers and she instantly showed me the video of a similar digging activity. I was apprehensive about finding something similar in India and the import duties seem to be at an all-time high these days! But then I remembered seeing something on Hopscotch.in a while back when browsing for Christmas gift ideas. A quick search told me that they indeed had what I was looking for.

The Kit is a bit pricey at Rs.899 but since it contains Real Specimens of rare stones for young Archaeologists to discover out of a brick, you get an experience far better than digging out plastic toys from a sand pit. This is the real thing!

Now, on to the un-boxing and the digging activity. I will let the pictures tell you the story from here:
Here’s what is included in the kit – The ‘rock’ containing the precious stones, digging tools – spade, brush and magnifying glass, activity booklet and an adventure guide that educates children on the stones they excavate.
That’s how the rock looks, safely wrapped in plastic.
Let the digging begin! Little hands use the digging tools to try and excavate the rare stones hidden in the rock.
Do we see anything yet? The little helper tries to see through the magnifying glass which is included in the kit.

The gemstones begin to reveal. Can you see them?
Let’s see more clearly by brushing away the debris using the brush included in the kit.
Seeing them very clearly now – A Tiger’s Eye stone, a Quartz Crystal and an Amethyst are clearly visible.
Seeing the stones peek through gives the activity a fresh burst of excitement and the little digger chips away eagerly.
And we finally excavate the first gemstone – A Real Amethyst!

The ‘treasure’ is valuable and my daughter insists on keeping them in my marble boxes.
So there they lie – the first batch of ‘treasure’ dug up by my little Archaeologists.
Once the digging expedition ended, we sat together and leafed through the pages of the adventure guide to read more about the stones we excavated from the brick. The activity book also has interesting and educational puzzles that the kids are sure to enjoy.
I would give this activity kit a full five stars for entertainment and learning. The price does look high for a single-use activity but when you think of it, you cannot really recreate this experience for your kids for any less, even if you knew how to.
