How To Keep A Busy Home Warm

Keeping a busy home warm is more challenging than you might think. People are always coming and going, and there is ample opportunity for hot air to escape.

If you find yourself in this situation, this post can help. It explores some of the strategies you can use to keep the temperature in your home toasty so you don’t freeze when the cold weather hits.

Invest In A Thermostat

You’ll want to start by investing in a handy thermostat. These can be smart these days and can adjust to your family’s routine, knowing when to switch on and off to maintain the temperature at the optimal level.

Smart thermostats are also remote controlled, meaning you can operate them from your device. You no longer have to worry about what’s happening in your home while you’re at work, since you have full control.

Seal Door And Window Drafts

Another tactic is to seal your door and window drafts using draft stoppers to block cold air. The worst place is usually the front porch, but you can also find drafts in many other places around your home.

The trick, of course, is to identify and eliminate them. Once you’ve done that, they’re no longer a problem.

Get Insulated Curtains And Blinds

Another approach is to get insulated curtains and blinds. Again, these help to prevent equalization in temperatures inside and outside, allowing you to retain more warmth in the winter.

These blinds are handy for all sorts of reasons, but the main one is that they work passively. Even if you have a busy home, they’re still working hard to keep the heat inside.

Don’t Use Space Heaters

Another piece of advice is to avoid using space heaters where possible. While they can be great for outbuildings, they are also expensive to run and don’t deal with the fundamental problem (which is usually failing windows or gaps around your doors).

The best approach is to fix these problems first or explore window replacement to see if that fixes the problem. Adding new glazing can sometimes block drafts, reducing the requirement for costly electric heaters in all your rooms.

Maintain Your Heating System

It should go without saying, but it also helps to maintain your heating system if you want to keep a busy house warm. Ensuring that it is working efficiently and has new filters guarantees that the air will continue flowing freely and to where it’s required.

Add More Soft Furnishings

You can also give your house the appearance of warmth by adding more soft furnishings. These are naturally insulating and usually pleasant to the touch (unlike concrete or stone flooring). Pairing these with blankets can change the psychology of your property, even if they fail to raise the temperature.

Cook Inside More

Finally, you can cook at home more. The residual heat from the stove or the oven will go into your rooms and help to warm them up, allowing you to kill two birds with one stone. Just remember to leave the kitchen door slightly ajar.
