When it comes to hosting, I believe the little touches make all the difference. And what better way to add charm to a gathering than by giving it a theme? Recently, I planned a private screening of The Sound of Music to honor director Robert Wise on his birth anniversary, and the evening turned into one of the most memorable movie nights we’ve ever had.

If you’re a creative hostess (or aspire to be one), here’s how you can weave film, food, and fun together for an unforgettable themed night with your friends and family.

Why The Sound of Music?

Because some classics never fade. Released in 1965 and winner of five Academy Awards, The Sound of Music is as beloved today as it was six decades ago. With Julie Andrews’ radiant Maria, timeless songs like Do-Re-Mi, My Favorite Things and the heartfelt Edelweiss, it’s the kind of film that still makes hearts full and voices hum along.
Setting the Scene: Private Screening Vibes
A big screen, cozy seating, dimmed lights -and the magic of Austria filling the room. We used our portable projector and a wide , white wall to screen and brought in extra chairs to seat everyone. We wanted to make the night feel special, almost like stepping into Salzburg for a few hours. To add an interactive twist, we encouraged everyone to sing along (because who can resist a round of Do-Re-Mi?).

Themed Menu: My Favorite Things
Of course, the food had to match the film. Being a vegetarian, I looked for recipes that could easily be made vegetarian. Inspired by the famous song My Favorite Things, I recreated two Austrian favorites:
-
Schnitzel – with a vegetarian twist: crispy corn schnitzel bites.
-
Apple Strudel – served warm with a scoop of vanilla ice cream.
To round out the feast, we had pasta for dinner (Schnitzel with noodles – pasta works, I guess?) and cheese popcorn for that quintessential movie-night crunch. Simple, cozy, yet perfectly in theme.

Of course, I printed out a cute poster with the lines from the song, to place alongside the food! This also ensured that the guests, who were not yet aware, came home knowing about the favorite foods of Austria.
Want to use the poster for your own party? I have included the full size file at the end of the post.

The Emotional Moment: Edelweiss
No matter how many times you’ve watched it, hearing Edelweiss towards the end is a deeply moving experience. That gentle song is more than just music -— it’s a reminder of love, home, and resilience. And sitting together, watching it play, we all felt a quiet hush take over the room.
How You Can Host Your Own Themed Movie Night
Want to recreate this magic in your own home? Here are a few tips:
-
Pick a film with a strong aesthetic or cultural backdrop. Think Roman Holiday, Eat Pray Love, or even a Bollywood classic.
-
Let the menu match the movie. Even simple snacks can become special if they tie into the theme.
-
Add a soundtrack moment. Encourage guests to sing along or play the score before/after the film.
-
Create small details. A themed dessert, a quote on the table, or a playlist can elevate the mood instantly.

Final Thoughts
Themed hosting doesn’t have to be complicated — it’s about thoughtfulness, not extravagance. Our Sound of Music night was proof that with a little creativity, you can turn an ordinary movie night into a magical celebration of film, food, and togetherness.
So the next time you plan a get-together, ask yourself: what story can I tell through this evening? That’s the secret to unforgettable hosting.
