Why You Should Study as an Adult

April 19, 2024 by Lata Leave a Comment

The idea of going back to school for many adults is not a pleasant one. We spend our whole childhoods looking forward to getting out of school, so going back into that doesn’t seem like a good idea. But the experience of school and education as an adult is remarkably different compared to when you’re a child. The idea of studying again, meeting project deadlines, and doing exams does not sound like a fun idea for some people, they may think that they’ve already progressed so far in life that they perceive that going back to school is one big step backwards rather than a propelling step forward.

But if you have aspirations to do more in your career, or you want to segue into leadership in healthcare, then you need to think about studying further. And that means going back as a mature student to do something more. It doesn’t necessarily mean you’re going back to the beginning again, but being an adult student can often mean excelling and improving on what you already know. Let’s take a look at the top reasons why you should say yes to studying as an adult.

  1. You could add to your income. The more you know, the more you can earn. The more that you have postgraduate education, or even graduate education can immediately boost your salary. Going for a professional role or a doctorate degree can up your salary by at least $50,000. It might be possible to earn these amounts in your current job, but it will take you longer and higher education will get you there shorter.
  2. You have a better chance of promotion if you’re working in healthcare. You are far more likely to step into a leadership role if you have a qualification at postgraduate level. This is because you have an in depth and more sophisticated knowledge than if you chose not to go for the postgrad in a higher position. Will be more responsibility and an increased scope of work but it goes back to our earlier point that you’ll also earn more money.
  3. You have the opportunity for change. If your current career is not matching your expectations, or it turns out not to be what you wanted in the first place, then you want to go back and do something that means you can follow your passion. Going back to school gives you more job opportunities and a chance to segue out of the career that you’ve got and into a career that you want. That can make a very big difference to your happiness and your health.
  4. You can do it while you work. When people think about going back to school, they believe they have to stop all of their commitments and go back full time. Unless you’re planning to go to something as hardcore as medical, you don’t need to do that. In fact, you can learn while you earn. Online schooling is flexible, and today’s education means that you can do that around your full time job and your other commitments. There’s no such thing as a logistical hurdle like driving or commuting to school, either.
