5 Things You Should Do When Choosing Higher Education as an Adult

September 16, 2024 by Lata Leave a Comment

Thinking of going back to school as a fully-fledged adult? It’s a great way to boost your career options and do something really good for you and your family, but how do you get it right? Here are some practical tips to help you choose the right path without losing your mind—or your life savings.

  1. Know Your “Why” (Because You’re Not Just Doing This for Kicks)

Before you even start Googling degree programs, sit down with yourself (and maybe a cup of coffee or glass of wine) and ask: Why am I doing this? Are you looking to switch careers? Climb the corporate ladder? Finally pursue that passion project you’ve been dreaming of since your 20s?

Understanding your “why” will help you zero in on the type of program that fits your goals. If you’re looking for career advancement, a degree program like an MBA or industry-specific certification might be the ticket. If you’re chasing a passion, maybe a creative writing course or graphic design degree is more your style. Whatever it is, knowing your motivation will help you choose wisely.

  1. Explore Degree Programs (But Don’t Get Distracted by the Shiny Ones)

When choosing a degree program, it’s easy to get wooed by the fancy titles and the schools with campuses that look like they came straight out of a movie. But remember, you’re an adult now—you need to be practical.

Take a close look at what’s actually being offered. Does the program give you the skills you need for your goals? Is the coursework flexible enough to fit your (already hectic) life? Are there online options? Don’t fall for the glitz and glamour—go for the program that’s going to give you the most bang for your buck.

  1. Budget Like a Boss

Let’s get real—education as an adult isn’t exactly cheap. And unless you’ve got a secret stash of cash hidden under your mattress, you’re going to need to budget for this. Look at the costs of different programs, from tuition to books to that extra-large coffee you’re going to need for late-night studying.

There are also financial aid options out there, even for adult learners. Scholarships, grants, and employer reimbursement programs might be available to help lighten the load. Don’t be afraid to ask around—money for education doesn’t always have to come straight from your pocket.

  1. Make Time Your Best Friend (Or At Least Your Frenemy)

You’ve already got a job, a life, and maybe even a family to juggle, so time is precious. When choosing a program, make sure it fits into your schedule. Some degree programs are full-time, while others offer part-time, evening, or even fully online options. Be realistic about how much time you can commit. You don’t want to end up burning the candle at both ends and then some.

  1. Check Out the ROI (Because You’re a Grown-Up, and Grown-Ups Think About This Stuff)

Lastly, think about the return on investment (yep, we’re talking grown-up stuff here). Will this degree lead to a better job, higher salary, or career satisfaction? Not every program will have a direct financial return, but if it’s fulfilling a lifelong dream or giving you skills that will make you happier in your work, that counts too.

Going back to school as an adult is a big deal, and it is pretty exciting, but you should not get carried away, an instead, make sure you do some serious planning so that you get it right, right from the off.
