It was a sunny afternoon in Key West, Florida, when I visited “The Cafe,” a small vegetarian and vegan spot, during my day trip from Miami. The place has a casual, artsy vibe, with mismatched furniture, colorful artwork on the walls, and plenty of plants giving it a cozy feel. It felt like the kind of place where locals and tourists alike would come to relax and enjoy a laid-back meal.

“The Cafe” – Vegan restaurant in Key West, Florida
I had especially wanted to have lunch here because they are famous for their vegan version of Key Lime Pie – something I didn’t want to leave Key West without having a taste of.
Veggie Burger
The menu was packed with options, from hearty salads and wraps to pasta dishes and unique daily specials. I decided to try their house special, “Our Famous Cafe Veggie Burger.”

Vegan Veggie Burger with Bean Salad
When it arrived, it looked great—a thick veggie patty on a toasted bun with lettuce, tomato, and a dollop of vegan aioli. The patty had a nice texture, crispy on the outside and soft on the inside, though it leaned a little more earthy than I’m used to. The side of bean salad was delicious and a nice touch.

It was huge and very filling!
After finishing the burger, I checked out the dessert menu. I had hoped to try their Vegan Key Lime Pie, which I’d heard good things about, but I was in for a huge disappointment!!!! They were out of it that day!

Vegan Carrot Cake
Instead, I went for the Vegan Carrot Cake. It was moist and flavorful, with a light cinnamon taste and bits of walnut throughout. The vegan cream cheese frosting was smooth and slightly tangy, pairing well with the cake. I also got an Americano, which was strong and refreshing.
The Cafe had a relaxed and friendly atmosphere, with a mix of people working on laptops, chatting with friends, or just enjoying a meal on their own. The staff were attentive without being overbearing, and the service was efficient.
Aside from the burger, I noticed they had other interesting dishes like a tempeh Reuben sandwich, tofu stir-fry, and even vegan nachos, which I’d probably try if I ever get a chance to visit Key West again.
Overall, The Cafe was a nice spot for a casual meal for vegans. The food was good, (though I was disappointed to not get the Key Lime Pie which was my Number 1 reason for choosing the place), and the vibe made it an enjoyable place to hang out for a while. If you’re in Key West and want a vegetarian or vegan option, it’s definitely worth checking out. Just maybe call ahead if you’ve got your heart set on the Key Lime Pie!

This was in the restroom – they have a great sense of humour lol!
